There are so many different surgical techniques available today regarding breast reduction and breast lift that it may be difficult to choose which one is the correct one for you.  The easiest way is to consult a plastic surgeon who can advise you on what is the best method according to your individual needs.  Each woman is different and will have different expectations regarding her breast reduction surgery.

Once you have booked a consultation your current breast size and shape can be evaluated by the surgeon and you can discuss all your concerns with him, including your expectations for the surgery.  Depending on your body type, breast shape, reduction amount and other factors, he will be able to suggest the best surgical procedure for you.

The vertical incision breast reduction method was developed for women who require a large amount of breast tissue to be removed.  This leaves what is commonly termed a “short scar” which leaves roughly half the amount of scarring that the traditional anchor scar method would leave on the breast.  This method also allows for good nipple repositioning on the pedicle.

How a vertical incision breast reduction is performed:

This type of surgery is done on an out-patient basis and the patient is not required to spend the night after the surgery in the hospital but can convalesce in the comfort of their own home instead.  The short scar or vertical incision breast reduction method is performed when a circular incision is made around the areola and then a single straight cut follows from the base of the nipple to the base of the breast, into the breast crease.

This type of incision has been likened to resemble a lollipop and is often referred to as a lollipop incision.  This surgical procedure does not require an incision to be made along the breast crease which means that there is much less scarring that would be experienced with the anchor scar procedure.  At this stage excess fatty tissue and glandular tissue is removed.

The rate will vary from individual to individual, with some needing more fatty tissue to be removed and others having more glandular tissue to take out.  The surgeon will decide how much needs to be removed according to what you discussed during your consultation.

Use of the pedicle method means that although an incision is made all the way around the areola, that the nipple and part of the nipple tissue remains attached to the breast, keeping the milk ducts and nerve supply intact.  This means that the patient will retain nipple sensation and that they will be able to breastfeed after the procedure.  This is not possible with a nipple graft, where the nipple is completely removed and reattached.

More than likely the vertical incision breast reduction method will include the laser bra surgical procedure, which uses portions of breast tissue which have been laser treated to provide an internal support structure for the breast.

Less scarring, shorter surgery time:

Any laser assisted surgery technique means that there will be less scarring, or minimal scarring and that the surgery time is shortened as this technique is faster and more effective.  There is also less risk of bleeding and swelling and reduced surgery time means that less anaesthetic is needed.
